Description
This course will give an overview of the role of the city in American life. Topics to be discussed will include the nature of the colonial city, the function of the city in the Revolution, the impact of the city in opening up the West, the ante bellum city, the early industrial city, the city and the automobile, suburbanization, the decline of the central city and reecent efforts at urban renaissance. The focus of the course will be primarily on socioeconomic and design issues.
