Description

This course seeks to explore the development of African American theatre and drama from the early 19th Century to the early 21th Century. Following a largely chronological path we will trace African American theatre and drama from its earliest incarnation to its current state. Focus will be split between black playwrights and black performers/practitioners. Special attention will be paid to the intersection between black theatre and black political thought, with discussion of the social and ethical issues found in the texts and performance conditions.
